NUS Conference 2020

NUS Conference 2020

Published: 15th April 2020, 12:00pm

Recently, Jenny (President of Education) and Kalen (LGBTQ+ Liberation Officer) attended NUS Conference virtually. Here's what went down!

You may not know much about the NUS, besides that you probably had a trusty NUS Card back in the day (or a Totum Card now). The National Union of Students was founded in 1922, and has around 600 Students’ Unions affiliated with it, including York St John Students' Union! Every year, the NUS hold a conference that delegates from the affiliated Unions around the country attend. The delegates decide on what motions and policies will the NUS adopt and who will lead the organisation in the upcoming year.

Student leaders from around the country come together and set the direction for how we want our Union of Students to move forward and make change at a national level. We discuss and vote on issues relevant to our student communities which in turn become the campaigns that elected officers work towards.

Jenny and Kalen were elected to be the NUS Delegates for our Union this academic year, voted in at our Students’ Union Executive Council. They were looking forward to a three-day trip to Liverpool together for conference, but unfortunately COVID-19 (Coronavirus) stopped them. However, the NUS altered their ways and held the conference online – and had a great time doing so! A big part of conference is discussing the motions and policies we vote on, so Jenny and Kalen met up with the University of York Students’ Union Delegates and spent the time discussing the motions with them.

Below are the new motions and policies that were agreed on at the NUS Conference by the delegates.
