Yesterday (12 November), York St John Students’ Union Student Council passed a motion which mandates the Students’ Union to lobby York St John University to reveal hidden costs associated with studying.
The motion, which passed unanimously, was put forward by the President of Education, Jenny Marchant. Having successfully passed through Executive Council, the motion becomes Students’ Union policy for the next 2 years
Immediately following Executive Council, Jenny announced her intention to launch a Hidden Course Costs campaign day on Monday 25 November. This day will be used to learn about the hidden costs faced by students at the University, with feedback boxes across campus and a survey online.
The campaign day will also include a panel at 1:30pm in the Students’ Union coffee lounge. This panel will feature Claire Sosienski Smith, Vice President (Higher Education) of the National Union of Students, a number of staff members from the University and a Chair of School.
Additionally, between 4-6pm, there will be a Student Education Zone in Fountains 002 (FT/002). This will be focused on hidden course costs and interactive discussion will be facilitated through Mentimeter.
Speaking about the success of her motion, Jenny said: “I am delighted that this motion has been passed by Executive Council. As one of my manifesto pledges, reducing the amount of money students have to spend on books, travelling and printing has been one of my priorities. The decision made today will drive my campaign on 25 November.”
Further information regarding the Hidden Course Costs campaign will be released through the York St John Students Union social media channels. For more information about the campaign, please contact Jenny Marchant ([email protected]).
