YSJSU | It’s International Women’s Day!
Today is International Women's Day! The theme of this year's campaign is based around #PressForProgress after the 2017 Global Gender Gap Report showed that gender parity won't be achieved in over 200 years.
Here at YSJ, girls rule. Simple as. If you don't believe us, have a look at our #ThisBUCSGirlCan campaign and then we think you'll change your mind! So while across the globe hundreds upon thousands of girls and women face one hell of a glass ceiling, here at YSJ we smash through those barriers. Not all universities can say that over 60% of their Executive Board are females and it's even rarer to find a female Vice-Chancellor. But it's not just our university Execs that are inspiring women - there's an army of female academics at this university who inspire, motivate, and drive us to be the best. There's then a whole host of managers, activators, and support staff who are amazing at what they do.
York St John University has been, and always will be, a place where people are free to be whoever they want to be, without barriers and without prejudice. Often it feels like the word 'community' is thrown around (how many times have we used it in any of the vlogs/blogs on our website?) but here at YSJ there is a shared feeling of care. Students are often seen caring about one another - whether it's a group of girls helping their friend get over the most recent f*ckboy or a group of mates looking out for one another on a night out. And while you may feel like you don't need to care about gender parity here in York, there are millions of females out there who need you to care and to take a stand because their voices are not heard or listened to.
Gloria Steinem, world-renowned journalist and activist once explained "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organisation but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights." So whatever gender you identify as, let's stand together for the rights of every person at York St John.
