March – What’s On

The weather is turning nice again, and fingers crossed it’ll stay that way for all the great things we’ve got going on this month! Here’s a selection of some of the regular events and special one-offs that we’ve got scheduled, but make sure you check out our website and Facebook page to keep up to date with any new ones that come along!


Special Events:

Old John’s Weekend | Friday 1st – Sunday 3rd | All Over!

We’re kicking off the month with Old John’s Weekend! Check out your club’s social media pages to find out what sessions will be running over the weekend, and welcome our alumni back! Don’t forget to hit up our Coffee Lounge as well for Saturday Karaoke Night from 7pm!


Dance Masquerade Ball | Friday 1st | 8pm | SU Coffee Lounge

Dance are donning their best black-tie outfit tonight in aid of SASH and York Food Bank, so prepare your disguise and dance the night away! It’s set to be a sell-out event though, so contact Dance or check in at the SU info point for any tickets left!


Wellbeing Festival | Wednesday 6th | 9am – 5pm | Foss Sports Hall

Join the WellU team and a range of our Sports and Societies for a day of entertainment and relaxation! You can get your free tickets here to take part in new activities and learn more about how to effectively take care of your physical and mental health.


Ghana Independence Day Celebration | Wednesday 6th | 7pm | SU Coffee Lounge

The African Caribbean Society are celebrating Ghana’s 62nd year of independence, and everyone is invited to join! Tickets are just £4 and include a pack of Jollof rice and chicken to feed you up with delicious Ghanian cuisine! Contact the society to get involved and enjoy an evening of food, music, culture, and fun!


Potluck Dinner | Thursday 7th | 7pm | SU Coffee Lounge

The Asian Culture Society, Japanese Society, and Korean Society invite you to their international dinner party! Bring your favourite dish from your home country (or anywhere in the world), bring your friends, and share with everyone. It’s a great opportunity to find a new favourite dish and learn about where they came from – and it’s free to join in!


International Women’s Day Event | Friday 8th | 12pm | SU Coffee Lounge

Friday 8th March is the annual International Women’s Day, so our Raising and Giving team are working with the University’s All About Respect Campaign to bring you a fun-filled celebration! There will be stalls, activities, and entertainment from our Sports and Societies, with a donation on the door. Everyone is welcome to join in, and if you’d like to take part in running an activity or performance, contact Alice Bolton at [email protected].


‘The Tale’ Screening | Thursday 14th | 6pm | SU Coffee Lounge

We’re joining the university’s All About Respect Campaign with a screening of ‘The Tale’, starring Laura Dern and directed by Jennifer Fox.

“Jennifer has it all, with a loving boyfriend and a great career as a journalist and professor. But when her mother discovers a story - "The Tale" - that Jennifer wrote when she was 13, detailing a special relationship Jennifer had with two adult coaches, Jennifer returns to the Carolina horse farm where the events transpired to try to reconcile her version of events with the truth.”

Converge Open Mic Night | Friday 15th | 7pm | SU Coffee Lounge

Join the Converge team for a night of great music, entertainment, and food tonight in aid of the charity Emerging Voices, helping those with disabilities gain access to music and performance. It’s a suggested £3 donation on the door, and everyone is welcome, whether you want to perform, or enjoy the talent YSJ has to offer!


PeerPong | Monday 18th March | 7pm | SU Coffee Lounge

Join YSJ Running for a charity Pong tournament! There’ll be a choice of beer or soft drinks to fill your cups with, so get up to five friends to join your team and Pong with your Peers! It’s just £2 per person, and everyone is welcome to get involved with the fun in aid of York MIND!


Challenges Abroad Race Night | Wednesday 20th | 7pm | SU Coffee Lounge

Join our students in fundraising for the Nepal Recovery Challenge, where they will help teach children in the community about how to take care of their health, and how to get lifelong learning skills to give them a brighter future. There will be races and horses to name for a price, and prizes for the owners and highest bids! There will also be great raffle prizes to take home, so everyone has a chance of winning, and it's just a £3 first bet on the door!


Men’s Rugby Union Charity Waxing | Monday 25th | 5pm | SU Atrium

Men’s Rugby Union are going hairless for charity tonight, with leg waxing and head shaving, so come on down and sponsor some smooth legs (and hope it doesn’t hurt too much)!


York Literature Festival Student Showcase | Wednesday 27th | 6.30pm | SU Coffee Lounge

Join us in the SU Coffee Lounge for an evening of enjoying and celebrating YSJ students' talent as part of York Literature Festival! The evening will feature readings and performances by students and special guests, giving a taster of emerging contemporary fiction, poetry, and non-fiction from this year's Beyond the Walls Anthology. YSJSU Unplugged | Thursday 28th | 7.30pm | SU Coffee Lounge

Our monthly open mic night is back! Come along to see a brilliant line-up, and as always spaces for people to get up join in on the night! It’s open to everyone, whether you want to perform music, comedy, poetry, or anything – or just bring your friends along for a great night of fun, since this month we’ll be joining forces with YSJ Music’s Spring Concert, so you can see even more in the YSJ Chapel beforehand!


Big Band Idol | Friday 29th | 7pm | Temple Hall

Tonight is St John’s Big Band’s annual charity show, this year in aid of SASH and Changing Lives. Come on down for a night of great music, great fun, and great raffle prizes – and to vote on your favourite performer! Contact the society to get your tickets for just £5, or if you want to enter someone from your Sport or Society to compete!

Global Café | Every Monday | 5pm – 7pm | SU Coffee Lounge

The Global Café runs every week with activities, snacks, and international fun! It’s free to everyone, and a great chance to learn more about the origins of holidays, different cultural celebrations, and more! Check out our website to see what the theme is for each week.


Quiz Nights | Every Tuesday | 7pm | SU Coffee Lounge

Women of the World Quiz | Tuesday 5th

In honour of International Women’s Day on Friday 8th, this week’s quiz is all about women! Brush up on your knowledge of historical figures, inspirational women, and a few random facts on females – and we guarantee you’ll leave knowing the names of a few more amazing women.


Chick Flick Quiz | Tuesday 12th

Tennis club is hosting this week’s quiz in aid of CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), and will be testing your knowledge of chick flicks from ‘Mean Girls’, to ‘Notting Hill’, to ‘Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging’. So get in loser, we’re going quizzing!


Social Sciences Charity Quiz | Tuesday 19th

Karaoke Nights | Every Saturday | 7pm | SU Coffee Lounge

Saturday nights are our favourite night of the week, so bring your friends and your best singing voice to celebrate the weekend with us! It’s £2 on the door with drinks deals and entertainment (provided by you) all night long!
