We can’t quite believe it’s the last week of term already! What a cracking start to the 18/19 academic year it has been. We’ve experienced so many great events from our long-standing Societies, watched recently set up Societies flourish and worked with students to create new Societies for this year. There has been so much excitement happening and our Societies engagement with the Students Union is growing – things are getting bigger and better each year! Fancy finding out some of the highlights from November and December? Check them out below;
History Society
This month, YSJ History Society has been all about trips! To really get into the Halloween spirit, at the beginning of this month the Society went on a super spooky ghost walk
around the city centre. This helped introduce our first years to the city and was a great evening out. We also went bowling this month as a fun sober social that really brought
out everyone’s competitive side. To round out this term we hosted our Society Christmas Dinner at Revolution which was a roaring success with a three-course meal and free drinks.
Drama Society
Drama Society have been busy this month rehearsing and performing their successful play, Buckets! This was a sold out event and raised £144 for their chosen charity Survive York. They also went on a Nativity Social with MPS which was loads of fun!
LGBTQ+ have had a great few weeks raising money for charity. They raised £90 for MESMAC with their speed dating event and £165 with their big YSJ Christmas Quiz and raffle which also went to MESMAC. Great work!
Christian Union
Christian Union Journey Week
30th October – 2nd November
At the end of October the YSJCU began our annual Journey week. The week is aimed at allowing all students of YSJ to come and hear how an individuals life story has been affected by Jesus.
The week began on the Tuesday night where we had a free curry and a pint, with former Gladiator, Warren Furman coming to talk to us. On Wednesday night we had a movie night for those not too keen to go out for Halloween, followed by a trip to town to hand out water bottles to those who did. Our Thursday night event was held in the upstairs of the SU and was focused on Mental Health and we heard the story of how our guest, Joe, battled anorexia through his teenage years, and also how he personally went about tackling this. We also had brilliant performances for the YSJ Dance Club and the Singing society. On the Friday evening, we had former YSJ lecturer Nick Watson come and speak to us. We also had men’s Football host a quiz, as well as a Hog Roast during the evening. Each night we had a Gospel message delivered to us by Paul Hinton from Hope Church Leeds.
Finally, on the Saturday a group of us went to the Riding Lights performance of Gospel Street, a modern day adaptation of Characters who met Jesus in the New Testament.
During the week we raised money for the charity ‘York Mind’, raising a total of £133 from all the events. A massive thank you to all societies who helped us out throughout the week, and to the SU for allowing us to use the facilities.
Carols at the Minster
29th November
Carols at the Minster was hosted by both the University of York and York St John Christian Unions.
For the third year running, over 1500 students filled York Minster for a night carols, a short message on the meaning of Christmas and festive refreshments after the main event.
We had performances from orchestras and choirs, as well as readings/prayers from York St John Students and SU Staff. It was a great evening to get us all in the festive spirit, thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Art and Design Society

Art and Design Society held a joint session with Japanese Society where they made lanterns using different crafts. It was great to see the Societies working together!

Singing Society
In November, we performed at the Christian Union's Journey event and then stayed for their talk about Christianity's role in mental health recovery for some individuals. We went to see A Star is Born together as a social. We performed at the Green Gown award ceremony at the National Railway Museum, entertaining guests as they arrived. We supported the creative writing society by going to their race night at the SU and buying a race. We went on a Bowling social. In December, so far, we had a drinking social at Revs where we had a meal too. We also went busking on two separate days in the rain and wind. We also hosted our Charity concert 'Singing Society at Christmas' where we performed as groups and solo acts, and had Small Screen perform a set for us, the night also included a raffle, pick n mix, and a (s)elfie corner where people could take Christmas selfies with Christmas props. Altogether with the busking and the concert we raised over £500.
Coming up in December, we are performing at the Snowball this Friday. We're also performing at the Big Band's free community Christmas concert for the elderly. We also have our annual Christmas meal in Revs next Tuesday which will be a great opportunity to celebrate all our hard work!
And that’s it for this month and for Semester 1! Thank you to all of our amazing Societies for their continued hard work and dedication to making extra-curricular activities so much FUN! We can’t wait to see what you all have planned in Semester 2, but for now, go enjoy your Christmas break!
