P-E Blog | A little more about me!
So... Who are you?
Steph Foxton & I am the new President of Education!
If you could pick one movie character who represents you, who would it be and why?
I wasn’t sure about this one but we were chatting in the office about who we think each other would be in a movie and George suggested I could be Princess Leia from Star Wars and I think that’s a cool character to be! She’s a kick-ass, strong female character who leads the Rebel Alliance so I think I could rally students to fight for their corner if they need to!
Who would you want with you if you were stranded on a deserted island?
I would have to say Bear Grylls as I think he’d be really good with all the survival stuff. If you’re stranded you have to be practical (as much as I’d love to chill with Adele, I don’t think she’d be any help!).
What is your favourite book / author?
I’m a bit of a bookworm so this is another tough one. I could happily reread all the Harry Potter books as me and my Dad used to read them before bed when I was little. There’s two books that I really loved reading and they are ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’ by Arthur Golden and ‘The Memory Keeper’s Daughter’ by Kim Edwards. Both of them are beautifully written and are so moving that I recommend them to everyone!
If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to and why?
If I could I would travel back to the setting of the ‘Boat That Rocked’ in the 1960s and join in with Pirate Radio as it looked like they had a really fun time. Plus the fashion in that era is mental and so bright and I think nowadays people need a bit more colour in our lives.
What does your perfect day look like?
My perfect day would be a really sunny day back home on the Isle of Man. I’d start off the day walking my dogs along the beach and then getting an ice cream. I’d then have a picnic at Peel Castle (it’s a ruined Castle in the west of the Island) with my friends and then go for a hike. I’d finish the night going out for a meal with my family and go back home for a chilled movie night with sweet and salted popcorn.
Where do you most want to travel, but have never been?
If I could go anywhere right now I’d either go to New Zealand as I have family and friends out there or I’d travel to the Amazon and explore the wilderness.
Who is your role model, and why?
My role model has to be my Mum. She is such a brilliant woman who is so loving and she inspires me to not be afraid of who I am as a person. She has such a commanding presence that I can only dream of having one day!
What song or album instantly transports you to a happy place?
Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks. It’s such a chilled out tune that is about spending time in the sun watching the day go by.
Your final meal ever… what would it be?
Oh I can’t decide! I’d either have a Chinese takeaway banquet or I’d go to Cosmos (the all you can eat place) and have a bit of food from every cuisine until I was stuffed.
What one piece of advice would you give to someone coming to YSJ for the first time in September?
Enjoy the experience and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and meet new people. Everyone is in the same position so you aren’t alone. Come to the events hosted by the SU during Freshers Week as well as going to your Induction lectures as it’s a great opportunity to get to know your new flatmates and coursemates.
If we're sitting here a year from now celebrating what a great year it's been for you in this role, what did you achieve?
I’d hope that we’re celebrating the fact that students feel more confident about going into the working world and that our Course Reps and Chairs of Schools this year have helped give us feedback that has helped change their courses for the better.
