S&A | Community League Semester 1
As the end of Semester 1 draws to a close, we thought it would be a great idea to have a look at what our Community League teams have been up to so far.
As well as BUCS Leagues, we have some Sport Clubs who enter teams into a Community League. This year, we are thrilled to say we have Volleyball, Netball and Badminton representing York St John and playing within different Community Leagues. It is a great way of our teams having more playing time and experiencing a different league to BUCS.
We touched base with these teams to see how they have found Community League so far this year…
First up, Sarah Ward (Community League Coordinator) shared her positive experience of entering Volleyball into Community League this year.
‘Volleyball play within the Ladies’ Yorkshire Division 1 League with a team comprised of players who are new to the sport. Playing within Community League has allowed these players to participate in their very first game of Volleyball and much to our delight, they have thoroughly enjoyed it. The Community League enables us to travel to different places and play against different ages. Although we haven’t won a game yet, our exceptions are high for the coming year!’
Olivia Bowers (Club Captain) of Netball also described how Community League has been a great opportunity for her team so far.
‘This year, YSJ Netball had the opportunity to enter the York and District Netball League which so far has been a great experience for all the girls involved. This League has posed many challenges and opportunities for not only our new 6th team but also has allowed for many girls from YSJ Netball to get involved with weekly matches against teams from all over York. The League has allowed all of us at YSJ Netball to gain more match experience, play at a different level from BUCS and the chance for a lot of the newer girls to get to know last year's Netballers. We have played some great Netball matches, bonded as a club and had the opportunity to improve our skills in the Sport.’
Finally, Jamie Perrenoud (Club Captain) of Badminton was also very keen to share how they had been finding Community League this year.
‘This year, we have been playing in the York & District Mixed Badminton League. So far we have only played a couple of matches, however we are due to play another two this week. The matches have been a good experience to play a different style of game and to play against other teams with different abilities. We have put up a good fight and enjoyed quite tight games against various teams in York, although we are yet to win one!’
Thanks to Sarah, Olivia and Jamie for sharing these experiences. As well as this, a massive thank you must be given to our Community League teams who make this possible. We love hearing your positive experiences, and it is great to see teams out their representing York St John in different Leagues. Good Luck for the next few matches and we look forward to catching up with you all in Semester 2!
