The SU Building is now closed, however staff are still available via email, further details regarding the current situation can be found here:
Hi there! We are your SU officers. Made up of three Presidents and Chairs of School we are here to make sure you have the best time at university.
We work for you, so whatever you need, whatever needs changing let us know. Got questions about events, courses, sports & societies or wellbeing issues? Then come and find us!
The Presidents can be found next to the Information Point at the SU and your Chair of School is only an e-mail away – just check your profile in the top right hand corner or hover below!
Reduce Hidden Course Costs - University fees are costly as it is, and the hidden extra costs add up. I want students to know from the very beginning what they’ll have to pay out for, and work with the university to reduce the amount spent on the rest, such as books, travel and printing. Equally I want to work to ensure course essential prints are funded by the university.
Increase Study Space - With YSJ increasing in numbers, study space is becoming limited. I want to work with timetabling to list the rooms free throughout the day and create a system so that these can be used as allocated study spaces.
Mental Health Support - In order to achieve academically, your mental health has to come first. I want to launch a campaign to break the stigma, and improve our available support on campus. I will bid for further mental health training for staff and students. I aim to introduce academic course related well-being sessions to reduce stress, and lobby for weekly mental health drop ins in the SU.
Mature and post-graduate community - Mature, commuting and post-graduate students are under represented at the university. I want to improve their engagement with the Students’ Union by hosting events & improving their timetable, so they feel as much a part of the social and academic community in YSJ as anybody else./p>
Volunteering and Employability - Preparing yourself for life after university can be a stressful task. I want to ensure you are given the tools you need to improve your employability, and work with Careers to guarantee students are accessing CV workshops and interview support. We should be looking for opportunities to volunteer that enhance our skill set, and I will work to do just that.
Awareness - ‘Family’ is used a lot to describe the life at YSJ. I want to make YSJ a safer, happier and more welcoming environment for you.
Diversity/ inclusion - I aim to show off all YSJ has to offer and bring the community together. Creating inclusive events and developing greater acceptance of diversity.
Student engagement/ events - Continuing growth in participation, improving your experience and creating more events will be pivotal to my presidency and give you a year to remember.
Building connections - I want to build on the relationship the university and the union has with the City. Building connections and opportunities for York St John Students.
Enjoy – University is about getting a degree, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a good time whilst doing it, right?
A WellU forum - I would like to increase the accessibility of WellU by designing an online forum where students can view sessions available, WellU updates and changes in one place!
Stamp out mental health stigma - I want to make mental health support more accepted and accessible. I would like to aid this through launching anti-stigma campaigns both on campus and in the local community.
A voice for YOU - I will regularly ask for feedback from all students. Have your say!
Reach underrepresented groups - I aim to further the inclusive ethos of YSJ by bringing the views and values of underrepresented groups to the forefront.
Improve support and signposting for student based issues such as housing, finance, student poverty and more!
