What to Expect This Year

What to Expect This Year

We can't wait for students to be back on campus and enjoying everything this city has to offer. At the Students' Union, we've been working hard to ensure that we can still provide activities and events to keep you engaged, and we're taking precautions to ensure you can safely participate and get involved.

Your experience at York St John is something we value, and the measures we take are to ensure your safety. We will be regularly reviewing how we operate as the guidelines from the Government change.

Welcome Week

This year, the University and the Students’ Union are holding #YSJFest2020 across our campus! Taking place over the first two weeks of term, we have planned a range of on campus and virtual activities. As well as this, we will be hosting student meet ups, fairs and events that you’ll be able to get involved in and meet likeminded students!

The festival kicks off on Monday 14 September, keep an eye on our website for our full event line-up coming soon!

Bar & Events

We have had to reduce the capacity of the bar area to ensure social distancing can be maintained and will be operating a table service system. So that we can still give you as much space as possible to socialise and get involved with us here at the Students’ Union, we'll be operating an outdoor area. To ensure your safety in the bar, we will be utilising a Track and Trace system. In the event that an outbreak does occur and we are informed that there has been a confirmed case in our venue, we will contact anyone who may have been exposed.

Due to current government guidance regarding live performances and music, we unfortunately will not be able to host our usual events calendar. However, we want to emphasise that this is only a temporary measure until we are in a position where we can guarantee your safety before returning to offering our usual events calendar. Similarly, due to current guidance, we will not be taking any event bookings for the foreseeable future until the guidance changes to a point where we feel comfortable in organising these events once more.

We are working with the University to ensure that sport sessions, such as training, can continue where possible. Our approach to sports at York St John will follow the guidance from both the Government and the governing bodies of each sport, and we'll continue to adapt as these develop.

Societies will be moved online for the first semester, and the Students’ Union will be working with them to ensure that fun, engaging and inclusive activities can continue! It is our goal to ensure that students receive the best student experience possible.

We are looking to deliver our fun and inclusive WellU programme in new ways so that we can continue to deliver a range of recreational sports that students can participate in. The Students’ Union is also launching our new WellU Hub which will feature content to support your wellbeing interests and concerns.

We will work to create and support online fundraising activities with students should they still wish to raise and give to charity.

We will be working in partnership with local charities and organisations to deliver as many online volunteering opportunities as possible. We endeavour to return to community-based volunteering as soon as it is safe to do so.
