Welcome back YSJSU! We hope you’ve had a great Christmas and New Year and that you’re looking forward to the new term starting. We’ve got an exciting project ready to launch in Semester 2 and we are looking for some volunteers to engage with this. Some of you may have seen that we are setting up a service called Yorsafe.
Yorsafe is all focused on promoting the following message to students – You’re Safe in York. We aim to recruit student volunteers to enter the city on our student club nights and monitor the safety of other students. These volunteers will receive adequate training and resources to ensure they are ready to take part in this opportunity, and we will not send students out into the city solo, there must be at least 3 Yorsafe volunteers on a shift at one time.
Over the past month, we have been working hard to pull a training schedule together for volunteers interested in this service. On Wednesday 13th February, there will be a training day which is revolved around different difficulties you may face during a shift for Yorsafe. This will include training from IDAS (Independent Domestic Abuse Services), York River Boat Safety, Eboracum Security (Conflict Management) and York St John University’s Wellbeing Team. The following week on Wednesday 20th February, there will be a First Aid Training day as well for volunteers.
This training will provide volunteers with a great range of skills and expertise which will be excellent to take forward into your future careers. We are looking for 12 volunteers for this service so if you are interested, please contact Alice Bolton ([email protected]) who will be able to give you even more information and register your interest!
