Jenny’s January Update
Jenny’s January Update
I hope you are all keeping well in this challenging national lockdown! I’m just doing a blog post to update you on the work I have been up to. If you have any questions on this please don’t hesitate to get in contact via email ([email protected])!
A major project for myself and the Officers during January has been working with the Academic Registrar and PVC Learning & Teaching on creating the new Safety Net for this Academic Year. I’m really pleased we managed to get this released, and pleased to see the positive impact it has had for so many students. You can find more out here https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/coronavirus-advice/safety-net-framework-20-21/
The Officers and I worked to secure rent credit for students in University accommodation affected by the lockdown. We were really pleased to see this sorted by the University and to help provide students with some support during this difficult time.
In the past month, it has been really important to keep in touch with fellow Officers around the country, to share best practice on safety net policies and support provided for students at their institution. I met with Officers regionally, nationally, the NUS Vice President Higher Education, and other Education Officers around the country.
During January Emma and I ran a three-week De-Stresstival Campaign in the Students’ Union. Week 1 surrounded Wellbeing support & Self Care advice, Week 2 was Study Tips & Sessions, and Week 3 was activities to take your mind off your studies. I’m really pleased with how this campaign went, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
In the Students’ Union we’ve just hosted Refreshers Week to welcome you all back into this Semester! I had a great time hosting events online such as the Pub Quiz, Book Club, Film Club and Art & Crafts!
I’m currently in the process of organising a University Green Week – with a small team of staff at the University. We aim to have this week during March full of events and activities for students to take part in, keep your eyes peeled!
SU Advice Service
The SU Team have been working hard to improve the Advice Service in the SU, we have had long conversations about how to ensure students are accessing our support, and improving academic advice!
I’ve been working closely with the Part-Time Officers, especially in regards to student feedback on learning in the lockdown. The Part-Time Officer Team and Presidents met with the Vice Chancellor, University Secretary, and PVC Learning & Teaching during January, to discuss student feedback. The Chairs of School have run some great sessions for reps to attend with really useful feedback, and I’ve worked with the Post Graduate Officer on support for PG’s during these challenging times. Some of our Officers are also planning fantastic campaigns, I can’t wait to see them!
Equitable Education Group
I’m currently creating plans in the SU to have an Equitable Education Group. The main aims of the group would be to ensure that policies and procedures provide a safe, fair, and inclusive educational experience so students are able to have fair opportunity to achieve their highest potential at university. This is currently in an early planning stage, but it’s good to get the ball rolling on this project!!
A big part of Officers roles is attending committees. During January I have attended the SU Trustee Board and the University Access & Participation Group. Recently I was appointed the Deputy Chair of the University Learning & Teaching Committee. During January I have worked on setting this agenda with the PVC Learning & Teaching, shaping how the committee will run during February. It’s been very exciting to have such an involvement in the process!
