President Intro: Jamie Andrews
President Intro: Jamie Andrews
Hi everyone, I’m Jamie Andrews and I’m your new President of the Students’ Union. This is my first blog post of the year, so it only seems right to introduce myself and tell you a bit about me.
I came to York St John after taking a bit of time out of education, and I’ve just finished my journalism degree after what has been the best 3 years of my life. Throughout my time at YSJ I’ve been involved in most things you can get stuck in with at uni. I was a student ambassador for three years, Chair of School for Performance and Media Production in my third year, I hosted karaoke at the Students' Union for 2 years and I was part of the Badminton committee. I really wanted to throw myself into every experience I could, and my final goal was that I wanted to represent the students of YSJ as your President of the Students’ Union.
I was elected back in February after what was an exhausting, but fantastic, campaign week and I can’t believe how quick the time has gone and I’m now starting the job. One of the biggest things I want to achieve is making sure that all of our students actually know what the Students’ Union is and what it does. We are so much more than just the bar.
My manifesto was written over 12 months because I wanted to make sure it was well thought out, that the points were necessary, it was achievable and not just something I threw together last minute. The biggest point for me in my manifesto is lobbying the university to eliminate graduation fees. After spending 3 years at uni and spending over £27,000 in tuition fees, it doesn’t seem right that students are then charged to attend their own celebration. This also potentially prices students out of their graduation and is something I am very passionate about ending. Every student deserves to attend their own graduation regardless of their financial situation. Other points in my manifesto focus on inclusivity and equitability and ensuring that all students feel represented by the Students' Union every day not just once a year during national celebrations. Furthermore, I’m very passionate about the activities and entertainment we offer our students. I really want to look at the events structure at YSJ and ensure that we keep evolving and creating events that EVERYONE will find fun and engaging. This might be more live music, stand-up comedy, drag nights, sober events, cultural celebrations, the list is potentially endless. This is just a brief overview of my manifesto and what I want to achieve, my full manifesto can be found here.
As much as my manifesto contains multiple points and objectives for the year, I realistically have one simple goal and that’s to ensure that I do everything I can to make sure every student at YSJ can enjoy their time here in the same way that I have.
I’m really excited for this next year and I can’t wait to get started on making your time at YSJ the best it can be. I’m really looking forward to seeing you all back on campus when we can return.
