Chris’s October Update
As October is drawing to a close, it has been a truly incredible month as we finally welcomed back students to campus in the closest thing to normality for nearly 2 years! Seeing all of you in person was an amazing experience and it’s a great taster of things to come as we look to the year ahead. Welcome Week was as exhausting as it was fun, the Students’ Union put on some amazing events that you all turned up in great numbers (apologies to those who were left sitting on the floor for the bingo or the pub quiz!). Here’s an update on what I’ve been doing in October.
It was a crammed 2 weeks, as we begun with move in weekend – spread across all the halls of residence we got the chance to meet the new cohort and promote the events we held. The three Presidents hosted events from Pound a Pint, Welcome Drinks, Bingo and the first Big Quiz of the year – we love how many of you turned up! Along with this we also helped with the sports and societies fairs which were a great showcase of our amazing sports and societies.
October has been a busy month filled with loads of campaigns. Alongside Kalen, our BAME Officer we have been celebrating Black History Month with lots of great and informative content going out. We have also running the ‘U Ok YSJ?’ campaign alongside the university which highlights the wellbeing services available to students and staff. As well as this, we had the ‘Work Safe Together’ campaign which was run to promote safety at university, focusing on river and fire safety, amongst other important areas.
As you will have seen, we laid out everything we are doing to combat the rise in spiking across York. We have ordered anti-spiking devices for the SU bar, as well as liaised with venues and the City of York Council to lobby them to promote change and ensure that students feel safe drinking in York. I have been invited to a meeting with City of York Council on the 11th November to lay out our concerns and ask for tangible changes in the city – the outcomes of this meeting will be relayed to you all as soon as possible.
Myself, and our CEO, took part in the universities’ Trans Inclusivity Awareness Training which was incredibly informative to take part in. As well as this, we had training for our sports and societies at the annual conference – it was incredible to see everyone back in person after 18 months away. Alongside this, we also had our Part-Time Officer training and I look forward to working with our PTOs during the year.
London Campus Visit
Myself, Aimée and Jamie visited our students at the London campus to give a talk and to meet the cohort. This was incredible productive and an amazing opportunity to get a feel for studying down in the capital. We look forward to working closely with London and to representing all students, be they in London or in York.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)
Myself and our CEO sat down to discuss how we can better improve equality, diversity and inclusion at the Students’ Union. This focused on three areas: student engagement, staff, and governance. These discussions were really productive, and while this will be a long process, it is an exciting and necessary project to be working on.
