Student Advice Memo

As a Students' Union we understand that due to the current circumstances surrounding COVID-19 (Coronavirus), now more than ever you may need access to our advice and support.
Please be assured you will still receive ongoing access to our advice services from our staff, who are working remotely to ensure you receive the support you need. This advice memo was put forward by our Student Opportunities team, to provide clarity to our students on what advice services we can, and unfortunately cannot, provide.
How we can help?
York St John Students' Union operates an advice service to assist students with any academic concerns. The academic advice we provide often centres around academic appeals, allegations of academic misconduct and complaints submitted against York St John University. Should a student feel that a decision has been made which is due to either procedural irregularity or due to the lack of sufficient action/acknowledgement of exceptional circumstances, we request they e-mail [email protected] to liaise with the Student Voice Coordinator about what steps can be taken.
What we don’t offer
Unfortunately, York St John Students' Union is not able to offer specific advice on housing, wellbeing, finance or legal issues. Where students contact the Students' Union for advice on the aforementioned issues, they may be signposted to an agency that can provide the specific and approproate advice. This may be university finance team or wellbeing team, or it may be the Citizens Advice Bureau for the latter. The Students’ Union may however, lobby the university or city partners on behalf of students regarding student rights. This work will be led by the Presidential (Officer) Team.
What to do should you require advice
We request that in all instances that any requirements for advice and support are directed to [email protected] where the Student Voice Coordinator will work with students to assess the appropriate course of action whether this is an appeal, complaint or if it is a matter to be passed to the Presidential Team.
COVID-19 advice and the Safety Net policy
York St John University have recently released a safety net policy to ensure that no student is disadvantaged in assessments and exams. We understand there are several specific questions which you will have regarding logistics and what it means for you and your classmates.
As this is an ongoing development and we are working closely with the university to ensure updates are provided as quickly as possible. In the meantime, please contact [email protected] with any queries you have. This is the central line of communication for the university.
