Jenny’s February Update
Jenny’s February Update
I’m super excited that it is nearly the YSJU and YSJSU Green Week I’ve been organising in partnership with University staff. Green Week is a celebration of the activists, businesses and alumni that are working to create a more sustainable future. There are plenty of events and activities to get involved with, so make sure to check out the week of events here https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/events-calendar/events/external-engagement/green-week-.html Also make sure to share your sustainability stories during the week using #YSJUGoGreen. I’m really pleased to have created this with the University, after it being in my Manifesto when running for President of Education. Please come along to the events and get involved!
During February I hosted an Education Zone which went super well! It was great to see lots of students and academic reps participating in the forum. The University Secretary and PVC Learning and Teaching came along too to speak to students about the issues the student body are having during the current climate. It was a really great Zone and I’m pleased to have got insightful feedback from it.
Education Officer Networking
In the current climate there are so many changes occurring in students’ education, so its super important I keep in contact with Education Officers around the country about any major policy changes, government guidance, and general student movement issues. I met with various Education Officers around the country, as well as my tutor group from NUS this month to share best practice.
Engaging in online learning
I’ve been working with the University closely to ensure we are evaluating how online learning has gone, and discussing best practice at institutions to ensure online learning maintains relevant and engaging to students at home in lockdown. I have passed on various comments from students and reps on how we can engage students at home in their learning.
We recently had the SU council, so it was great to see all the Part-Time Officers during this! We passed some new motions and had some great discussions about supporting students during the national lockdown
A big part of my remit is attending various University committees, I’ve recently had Learning & Teaching Committee, SU and Exec Board joint meeting, and Quality & Standards Committee. It was the first Learning & Teaching meeting where the President of Education role is the Deputy Chair, so that was very exciting and a fab opportunity for student partnership!
Working with PVC Learning and Teaching
I’ve been working particularly closely with Susan Orr, the Pro Vice Chancellor Learning & Teaching. Recently we’ve discussed all sorts to support students in their academia moving forwards, such as improving engagement in learning, and also improving mechanisms in the course rep system.
