Before we continue first things first, what is WellU?
WellU is a programme that brings together mental wellbeing and exercise / physical activity sessions. The programme is put together in a way that should appeal to students and staff alike, with sessions that are engaging, accessible and aligned to local and national trends. WellU is for everyone, there is no required ability level, nor is there a commitment, members are free to pick and choose which sessions this wish to attend, the only recommendation we would give is to try every session once, you never know what you might enjoy!
If you are looking for varied physical activity, from recreational sport sessions to popular fitness based classes as well as mental wellbeing session for the price that is a fraction of Sport Club membership or local gym membership, look no further than WellU!
If you are still unsure whether WellU is for you, check out the other pages in this section and make sure you click on the testimonial section to find out what students think of the WellU Programme!

Its great saying all the WellU sessions will be good for physical and mental health, however how?
WellU this year is all about making fitness and wellbeing accessible, affordable and part of your student life. Studies have shown that students who participate in regular exercise perform better at university, are more employable and have greater mental wellbeing.
The thought of exercise can be scary – will I be able to keep up with everyone? Will I look out of place? What if people judge me? The only person judging you, is you. You don’t have to be a fitness fanatic to join the WellU exercise programme. You may want something to do in the mornings or evenings, you may want to meet new people or yes, you may want to get fit. It doesn’t matter, WellU welcomes everyone to get involved with our programme and have fun with it.
So don’t put it off any-longer, get involved today!
Eating well doesn’t mean you have to be stuck with salads and juice diets. Having a healthy balanced (being the key word) means everything in moderation. If your uni flat wants to order a take-away, you don’t need to miss out. Have the takeaway but maybe go to an extra fitness session to work off those extra calories. WellU offers a wide-range of nutrition advice including our eat well, move more sessions that allow you to work with a personal trainer who can provide you with an in-depth nutrition plan so you are able to stay on top of your healthy eating regime.
WellU also offers weekly blogs and vlogs which will show various things such as how to do a healthy, cheap food shop. Not only this, however look out on the SU website for weekly recipes that will stay in your healthy eating plan as well as filling you up! WellU also offers of Tuesdays
and Thursdays free breakfasts in our new wellbeing café! So you are saving money and eating well, it’s a win win.
Unfortunately mental health issues are on the increase – however WellU wants to do everything we can to help students and staff tackle this. Here at WellU we are providing mindfulness, meditation as well as ‘time to talk’ which, we hope, will provide a source for students and staff to reach out if they need to. Our wellbeing sessions can include many aspects such as problems with accommodation, just for a general chat or even if you want to meet new people.
We want to provide a safe station for students and staff to access anytime. The WellU graduate intern (Cathy Hanson) and the President of Wellbeing and Diversity (Olivia Bowers) can be located in the students union so if the sessions WellU provide don’t fit around your lifestyle, you can always pop in for a chat or email Cathy Hanson or Olivia Bowers.
Alternatively head over to the students minds website or visit the wellbeing team in Holgate.
