Society Blog | Society of the Month

Welcome back to another one of YSJSU’s Societies event of the month blogs. Since being back at university our societies have been bringing out some amazing events and fundraisers, and campus has been busy with their activity but one event stands out, purely for its ability to encompass all of what our societies have done over the year.

It is of course our annual societies awards dinner, which was a fantastic event that celebrated the fantastic achievements of YSJSU’s societies. Before we get started on  the event itself a big thank you needs to go to Harriet Stainton our events and venue coordinator, who made the event what is was, and has put months of work into it (and made sure we got a photo booth – big win for all of us!) Thank you also to the SABBs, the SU staff team and the sports and societies committee that helped make the event happen!

The night started with welcome drinks in the SU and a coach ride (full of singing if you were with MPS) over to the racecourse. After a welcome speech from our president Laurie the accreditation for the year was awarded, a scheme that was introduced by one of our previous president Laura Jackson in 2015.  Before the main awards could be awarded our students tucked into their dinner (the giant Yorkshire puddings are the stuff of legends).  Nine awards were handed out over the course of the evening and you can see all the nominations and winners here .

With awards over the dance floor opened up, with MPS performing a scene from their upcoming show legally blonde, which was met with a mix of amazement and utter bewilderment. The night ended (for some) with coaches taking everyone into town for our official after party at salvation. All of the things you’ve just read about (welcome drink, photo booth pictures, coach travel, 3 course meal AND club entry) all was covered by the price of the ticket. So why would you not want to come along next year?

It was a brilliant night and was great to see all of the societies relax after a long year, well done to all of our societies!
