Freecycle is an annual campaign that we run at the end of each academic year here in the Students’ Union!
It’s a campaign to help promote less waste in York at the end of the year. As students leave for summer we often find bins that are spilling over because they are so full of items people have collected over their three years… we have even seen some students hire skips to get rid of their items they had that much!
The majority of this ‘waste’ is still in a good enough condition to be used again. So we are asking you to bring in your items rather than throw them away, help the environment and help your local bin men!!
We collect items ranging from clothes (we want a lot for our Swap Shop!), pots and pans, cutlery, books, ironing boards, airers… basically ANYTHING that is still usable that another student can benefit from. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to get some free items that you need as well!
Here is how it all works:
- Items can be dropped off in the SU 1st-12th May.
- Items are FREE to collect from the SU between the 15th-17th May.
As mentioned above we also have our SWAP SHOP on the 16th May, 11am-4pm in the Students’ Union Bar. This is where you can buy clothes and trade yours in! It’s £1 to trade in your item and get a new one or £2 to just buy a new one. All money raised will go towards St Nick’s in York which is an environmental charity who also run Eco therapy sessions. As well as the Swap Shop we are also doing a Slam Dunk the Junk game where you can win some prizes if you guess the right bins your rubbish goes in! Any leftover items at the end of Freecycle will be donated to charity shops in York!
We hope to receive plenty of items from you all and hopefully we can help you offload some of your stuff!
