Become an External Trustee

York St John Students’ Union Trustee Board is seeking people with skills and experience at senior management / board level to serve as External Trustees on our Trustee Board. The Trustees are responsible for the overall running and management of the Students’ Union and overseeing all the major decisions on behalf of the Students’ Union.  They will set out and oversee the strategic direction of the Students’ Union and must feel confident that the organisation is well managed and meeting its objectives. The Trustees are also responsible by law for the financial security and transparency of the Students’ Union.

What does it involve?

The Trustee Board meets four times a year.  In addition to this, Trustees may attend the Students’ Union General Meeting as well as the occasional social events.  Some trustees also sit on the Trustee Board sub-committees such as the Finance Committee and HR & Remuneration Committee, and so will be required to attend additional meetings.


The Students’ Union Trustee Board is looking for individuals with specific finance and/or member led organisation backgrounds, skill sets and experience; and also individuals with a strategic management background.


York St John Students’ Union is a membership organisation serving over 6,250 students across a city centre based campus in York.  The Students’ Union runs a variety of membership and commercial services to assist students during their time at York St John University and to enrich the overall student experience. 

The Students’ Union is run by a combination of democratically elected student officers and permanent staff. Three students are elected each year by cross campus ballot to the posts of President of the Students’ Union, President of Education, and President of Wellbeing & Diversity, and are known as the Officer Trustees. They are responsible for overseeing the whole of the Students’ Union’s operations, and representing the student point of view to the University.  The Sabbatical Trustees sit on the Trustee Board alongside up to five External Trustees and two appointed Student Trustees who are selected to sit on the Board for a period of two years, (three years for External Trustees).

Applicants will need to be available on Friday 21st April 2017 to attend an Appointments Committee where they will be interviewed by student representatives, and then to attend the April Trustee Board meeting on Thursday 26th April 2017 as part of their induction.
