After every single election at YSJSU, we always try and catch up with the winners so that you can get to know them a little better. This year we saw two of the current team re-run & get re-elected, but we still thought it would be a good idea to ask them a few silly questions, as well as some serious ones, so you could get to know them all over again!

So.. Who are you?

My name is George Coombs and I am your current President of the Students’ Union, and I’ll be here for another year!

If you could pick one movie character who represents you, who would it be and why?

I’m not really a big movie junkie, but I always get compared to King Julian out of Madagascar, mainly because he’s a loud and happy fool and maybe because he’s a sassy little man.

Who would you want with you if you were stranded on a deserted island?

I never know how to answer this question. I could say Mr Obama, or maybe even a survival guide; possibly Peter Kay if I wanted a laugh, or my parents if I just wanted a nice family-stranded escape. I think my answer is everyone. Let’s just get everyone on one island and have a good laugh. Yes we’re stranded but eh, we’ll have a good time while we’re here.

What is your favourite book / author?

I’m currently reading Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman and it’s just fantastic. It’s set out a little bit differently to anything I’ve ever read, but once you get into the flow of it, the bouncing back and forth between key points in Elio’s summer, it’s brilliant. It makes you appreciate the little things.

What does your perfect day look like?

I don’t really have a perfect day because I am a firm believer that every day is as perfect as you make it. Wake up every morning with a positive mind set, treat everyone with respect and kindness, and most importantly, be spontaneous. Every day is a good day.

Where do you most want to travel, but have never been?

Everywhere. The only thing I’ve ever wanted to do ever since I was young is travel the world. We only get one life and one chance, so why not run around and see what this beautiful world has to offer. I always found that the little towns, or the smaller natural parks are much better. I’ve always wanted to go to Oregon and Alaska, explore the west coast of Northern America and see what the little gems I can find. Anything with trees and I’m happy.

Who is your role model, and why?

My family. They always have been and always will be.

What song or album instantly transports you to a happy place?

Youth by Daughter is a big one, or Problems by Petit Buscuit – such a jam I recommend it to anyone.

Your final meal ever… what would it be?

Nah I can never answer this question because I’m such a fatty. Probably my Nana’s homemade Shepard’s Pie; 10/10 would recommend.

Summer or Winter Archies Day?

Summer, hands down.

What’s been your favourite YSJ Memory?

A lot of amazing things have happened over the years (and I’ve been here for a while now) and I find it difficult to pick just one memory. I think back to my first year and it’s extremely different to the memories I have from this year. I think the whole experience is an adventure I won’t be forgetting anytime soon, but Summer Archies Day 2017 was a classic.

Why did you decide to run for this role?

By the time you get into the groove of this role, and you start to notice the changes that you can actively make within the University, your time is up. I decided to re-run to ensure there was a level of continuity for the Union, the University but importantly for the students. I wanted to make sure that by the time I finally leave YSJ it’s evolved into a better institution that all students can enjoy.

What do you hope to achieve?

I want to adapt the way we look at feedback even more, as my work with feedback isn’t done yet. I want to challenge the local council on a lot of issues within the local community, not only for students but for York itself. I want to keep putting on fantastic events for ALL students. Continued support for Societies and Sport Clubs so they feel empowered to lead and run their own extra-curricular activities, BUT most importantly, I want to have some fun. This is a great job, and an even better Union, so let’s just enjoy our time at YSJ. Here’s to another year YSJ, I look forward to it.
